On the afternoon of March 26th, Mr. Zongheng Xu, mayor of Shenzhen, Yutang Chen, vice secretary, and Guoqiang Huang, vice secretary visited Shenzhen Graduate School of PKU who were accompanied by chief leaders from Educational Bureau, Development and Reform Bureau, Financial Bureau, Urban planning Bureau, Bureau of land properties, Nanshan County Government and Committee of University Town. They gave special investigations and studies on the development of PHSB and STL. Wen Hai, vice president of PKU, president of Shenzhen graduate school, Shouxu Shou, President Assistant of PKU and Executive Vice President of Shenzhen Graduate School, Shengji Luan, Hong Zhang, Yonghong Zhang, Vice-Presidents of Shenzhen Graduate School, and Prof. Lehman, President of STL, attended the investigation conference.
President Hai reported to Mr. Zongheng Xu on the international construction progress of this graduate school. He said that Shenzhen Graduate School of PKU aimed to build into an international campus with characteristics of “Inter disciplines, Application Academy, Forefront Field, and International Standard’ and create an international brand. As a rising international city, Shenzhen needs a world-class business school. President. Hai initiated the objective of building a world famous business school in Shenzhen three years ago. The construction of PHSB has received the initial results and PHSB got the financing and the title of the HSBC. Then President Hai pointed out that PHSB is a brand of PKU as well as a valuable asset of Shenzhen.He also introduced the prospect of STL and its significance to Shenzhen’s international attractiveness. With deep affection, President Hai stated that all the staff and students were fully aware of the identity as the component of Shenzhen’s higher educational system. “It is our duty to realize the development of Shenzhen’s higher education by leaps and bounds and contribute to the construction of building Shenzhen into an innovative and international city.”, he said. Mayor Zongheng Xu and other attendents were deeeply moved by President. Hai’s speech. Mayor Xu applauded fistly to express his sincere thanks and fervent hope to Shenzhen Graduate School of PKU. The presented leaders from different bureaus gave specific responses to a series of problems in school development and made meaningful and constructive comments and suggestions.
Mayor Xu made a warmly speech in the investigation conference. He pointed out the indelible contributions of Shenzhen Graduate School of PKU as well as another two graduate schools in the University Town to the development of Shenzhen.He emphasized three aspects: firstly, these schools pushed the development of higher education in Shenzhen by leaps and bounds and promoted the educational reform in all round; secondly, these schools made great contributions to Shenzhen and cultivated and attracted high-level personnel of international standard;thirdly, these schools brought about some creative factors in promoting the city’s development.
Mayor Xu said that in a short span of 30 years, with reform and opening-up policy and conducive conditions of being adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, Shenzhen hadbeen embarking on a road to success with digestion, absorption, and innovation of advanced technology. Though a large number of local enterprises benefited, the basic innovation ability of Shenzhen was still weak. Shenzhen’s development was relied on the cooperation with key research institutes, universities and research institutions overseas and improvement of the independent innovation in every aspect. Mayor. Xu added that the municipal government had attached great importance to the construction of University Town and would actively create comfortable conditions for the graduate schools, so that the higher education in Shenzhen could develop in a healthy and steady way.
After listening to the opinions of the participants, Mayor Xu made specific deployment on the solutions and schedules of solving existing problems in the construction of PHSB and STL. Furthermore, he asked the relevant authorities to open up ideas and actively promote the service for educational units of the University Town to create good conditions for them.
