PHBS 2014 New Year’s Party

On December 22, 2013, the much awaited Peking University HSBC Business School’s New Year’s Party was held in the ballroom of the Intercontinental Hotel in Shenzhen. Among the key signatories present at the party included the Dean of HSBC Business School, Professor Hai Wen, Executive Dean Professor Vincent Chang, full time faculty and staff members, Master’s degree, MBA and Doctoral students. The party was centered around the development of PHBS and followed a formal dress code with all the men wearing tuxedos and suits and the ladies wearing evening gowns.



The party attracted a wide array of influential dignitaries. These included Vice Secretary-General of Peking University as well as Secretary of Party Committee of Shenzhen Graduate School, Professor Bai Zhiqiang, Vice President Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University, Director of the Chancellor’s Secretariat Office Niu Hongwei, Dean of the College of Information Engineering Professor Wang Wenmin, Dean of the College of Environment and Energy, Professor Cheng Jiayang, Dean of the School of Advanced Materials, Professor Pan Feng, Professor Philip McConnaughay from the School of Transnational Law. From the field of business, President of Citibank Shenzhen branch Mr. Ouyang Yanwen, Vice President of HSBC Shenzhen branch Mr. Liang Yu, Vice General Manager of China Telecom Nanshan Branch Mr. Zhang Hui also attended the party.



The party was sponsored by Dongguan Zhihui Valley Investment Center and Peking University HSBC Business Zhihui Valley Research Center. The prizes for the raffles were sponsored by China Telecom, Shang Shufang Restaurant and the collective contributions of the MBS students.



The party began with Professor Hai Wen’s welcome address which the entire PHBS community keenly listened to. Professor Hai emphasized that the party was organized not only to celebrate past achievements but also to create a blueprint for future development. He said that PHBS has made exponential progress in the past ten years and with the completion of the PHBS teaching building, the school will expand its academic activities.



Professor Hai’s speech was followed by a plethora of performances by students from PHBS. Dint of hard work and zeal was clearly seen each passing performance. Some of the performances included a dance to the song ‘Love Struck’ by Liu Li ‘Goddess’ Yuan and her group and an exotic ‘Tango girls’ by the class of 2013. The international students also joined in celebrating the holiday mood with a warm performance of Jingle Bell Rock. The international students left the audience surprised when they got down the stage to distribute candies in the Christmas Spirit.



The performances were followed by the formal gala dinner. As the dinner proceeded, most of the attendees offered a toast to each other. The students took this opportunity to offer a toast to their beloved faculty members and friends.  The class representatives of all classes got on to the stage to offer toasts on behalf of their class. The international students joined in offering toasts in their native language highlighting the internationalization at PHBS. This was followed by the PHBS raffle which was swept by the Quantitative Finance class which the Dean dubbed ‘extremely lucky’. The party came to an end after the raffle and a clear expression id disappointment was seen in the faces of the students who did not wish it to end.
