The 2nd PHBS-BOC Nationwide Mobile Financial Application Development and Design Competition, launched in July last year, has named its winners. Organized by Bank of China (BOC) and the Risk Management and Insurance Research Center (RMIRC) of Peking University HSBC Business School, the contest drew participating teams from over 50 universities around the country.

The competition required participants to submit mobile software applications, commonly called “apps,” that can directly function on the BOC traders’ open platform. This called for combining financial skills and programing ability, which substantially raised the threshold of the competition. In order to help the teams better make use of synergy and apply theory to practice, the organizing committee sponsored a series of offline team-building salons to bring together talent from IT and finance backgrounds. BOC IT experts helped solve technical problems encountered by participants, such as interface selection, code barriers, etc.

Criteria for the winning apps covered product innovation, market demand, risk analysis, marketing strategy, app design, and market feedback. One team was chosen for first prize, two for second prize, seven for third prize, and several for honorable mention awards. The list for first, second, and third prize is as follows:

Taking part in the competition gave students an opportunity to apply innovative ideas to real financial markets. Judges said that the works submitted by the participating teams were overall of high quality with creative ideas and delicate designing. If further improved, the works may contribute to the development of the bank’s mobile finance business.
