The CFA Institute’s Asia Pacific Regional Investment Research Challenge final competition in Manila, Philippines welcomed 21 student teams for the event held March 11 – 13. Peking University HSBC Business School finance and CUHK economics dual master’s degree candidates participated the competition. They were Li Ruipeng, Du Yu, Zhao Yi, Yu Jie and She Yangjie.

Won this year by a team from the Ateneo de Manila University, the CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annual global competition that provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis. Students work in teams to research and analyze a publicly traded company — sometimes even meeting face-to-face with company management. Through the competition, students can learn more about investment.

All teams were local champions in the Asia Pacific region. The PHBS team won qualification in the South China Regional Competition held in February. They were joined at the Manila competition by participants from the Guanghua School of Management, champion of the North China Regional Competition, and Zhejiang University, champion of the East China Regional Competition.

Underwritten by the CFA Institute Philippine Society and sponsored by Kaplan Schweser and Fitch Learning, the competition was held in the Sofitel hotel. Honored judges included Paul Smith, CEO of the CFA Institute; April Tan, Vice President of COL Financial; winners of past competitions as well as CFA Institute Society members from investment banks, hedge funds, and security companies in the Asia Pacific Region.

Competitors from PHBS said the organizing committee prepared very well for the competition as they held a lunch communication meeting at the beach, which created chances for competitors from different regions and CFA holders from industry to communicate. Through the competition, PHBS participants established friendship with teams from National University of Singapore, National Taiwan University, and Auckland University of Technology.

The PHBS team heard from Brian Stype, in charge of the CFA Institute Research Challenge organizing committee, that the next regional competition may be held in Chicago in the United States.
