Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and Peking University have signed a memorandum of cooperation to expand the PKU Shenzhen campus to include undergraduate and other special programs. Currently, the Shenzhen campus of PKU is a graduate school only. The August 29 signing ceremony was held in Guangzhou and was attended by a number of local dignitaries and representatives of Peking University.

The expansion builds on the 2001 establishment of Peking University Graduate School in Shenzhen in the Xili area of the Nanshan District, along with founding the Peking University Shenzhen Hospital, located in the Futian District.

With its 21st century perspective on cultural exchange between the East and the West, PKU Shenzhen will combine the science and humanity heritage of its parent Peking University in Beijing with the entrepreneurial spirit of Shenzhen to build a globally-minded and bilingual campus. The university plans to build several small but comprehensive academic institutions in the humanities and fundamental sciences. Additionally, PKU Shenzhen will focus on information science,  build a medical school and corresponding academic research institutions.

Said Peking University Party Secretary Zhu Shanlu, “PKU’s strength in talent, academic disciplines, and scientific research coupled with Shenzhen’s regional advantages and industrial characteristics not only provides significant support for Shenzhen, but also the whole of Guangdong Province.” He continued to remark that PKU has been on the forefront of improving higher education, boosting cutting-edge medical research, and elevating the level of medical service. “PKU Shenzhen is on the frontier in domestic higher education, especially medical education reform as well as providing an innovative platform for cooperative education.”

Ma Xingrui, deputy party secretary of Guangdong Province and municipal party secretary of Shenzhen pointed out that “it’s imperative for Shenzhen to utilize PKU’s strength in highly-competent talent cultivation, knowledge innovation, and medical research which makes up for Shenzhen’s shortage in top-tier universities. Shenzhen will spare no effort to support the development of PKU Shenzhen to produce high quality talent, superior medical resources, and attract adequate talent and technical support to become an international innovation center for high-tech industries.”

In addition to Zhu and Ma, others attending the signing ceremony are as follows: Hu Chunhua, member of Politburo of CPC Central Committee and provincial party secretary of Guangdong Province; Shenzhen Mayor, Xu Qin; Peking University President Lin Jianhua; Vice Director of the Peking University Administration Committee and Dean of the PKU HSBC Business School Hai Wen; and Chancellor of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, Wu Yundong, among others.
