On the morning of April 4th, Wen Hai, vice president of PKU, made a speech about the 60 Years of China’s Economy on Shenzhen Cultural Forum held in the Lecture Hall of Shenzhen Library. This keynote speech delivered by President Hai was the first session of Shenzhen Cultural Forum in year 2009, and President Hai was the first speaker of lecture series to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of People’s Republic of China.

The Lecture Hall accommodating more than 400 people had a full house before the lecture started.

In the first part of President Hai’s lecture, he recalled the changes in China’s economic policy since the last 60 years. He divided the 60 years into four stages. The first stage is the socialist transformation from 1949 to 1957; the second stage is the planned economy from 1957 to 1978; the third stage is the period of attempt to reform in the end of 1970s; the forth stage is the comprehensive reform after 1993.

President Hai pointed out that we explored an unprecedented path, that is, using planned economy to realize common prosperity, in the first 30 years. In the later 30 years, we transited to another road —— market economy in order to deal with the remaining issues.

Subsequently, President Hai gave his insight on the issues closely related to people’s life including China’s Rural Reform, urbanization, housing and medical care. He pointed out that the most important things of China’s development over the next three decades are urbanization and industrialization, both of which are sign of economy take-off.

In the Q&A part, President Hai exchanged ideas with enthusiastic audiences on the topics most concerned nowadays. His insights received continuous applause.
