Wen Hai       Dec. 22
Distinguished guests, faculty, staff, and students,
Good evening everyone. It is again time to celebrate the New Year. Today we meet together to welcome the start of a new year with a lot of joys, and to celebrate the successes of the past year. On behalf of Peking University HSBC Business School, please allow me to express our sincere thanks and deep respect for all the leaders and guests, dedicated faculty and students!
2013 is not a usual year for PHBS. During this year, with the fervent support from all the staffs and various areas of the community, we have accomplished praiseworthy achievements in the past year. And then a critical step in the road to the first-class business school of the world is taken.

In 2013, we ushered in a historic moment: the new building of PHBS has completed after three years’ efforts. As the world’s largest single business building, setting classrooms, faculty offices and public facilities as a whole are offered to serve. It is also in line with the international education of PHBS and consistent with the temperament of first-class business school. A teacher from Beijing visited the school building and evaluated the building: "it is poised for brilliant achievement"

Indeed, the completion of the building sets a solid foundation for our future, but what we really rely on for the future development is our soft strength in scientific research and teaching.
This year, the level of our teaching and researching has been further improved. Our teaching and research level has been enhanced as 5 new faculty members, coming from globally recognized universities with focuses in economics, management and finance, have joined our team of exceptional faculty. Now we have 46 full-time faculties in total. Meantime we enroll more and more new students including 260 Chinese students and 46 international students. At the same time, the second session of 15 full-time MBA students and the first 61 part-time MBA students have joined us, in total 95 MBA students being currently enrolled.

This year, we focus on the construction of international environment. In addition to the international student recruitment, we also push on the international exchange program with 53 corporate business schools. This year we received students from 13 colleges and send 47 students to aboard.

This year, our academic activities are more prosperous. Within this special year, we held many financial forums to invite renowned scholars to introduce students the academic session and the latest achievements of the industry. These conferences not only opened up the academic vision of teachers and students, but also improved the influence of PHBS

This year, we have strived to improve our methods of instilling discipline and ethics. We have developed a quality weekly Physical Education Development Training course. For our students, it has not only provided good physical exercise and character, but has also strengthened team spirit and a sense of cooperation during the training courses. The solid professional knowledge and the courage to endure hardship of our students combined with the teamwork and strong responsibility have been recognized and appreciated by more and more people.

In a word, 2013 will soon be over, yet with great achievements we have accomplished this year by the joints efforts of whole faculty and students. But we also know that there are far more for us to improve. "As for how a man to cultivate the virtue gentleman trip, the wisdoms advise “static with cultivate one's morality, cultivate virtue through practicing thrift”. Moreover, one can't show high ideals without simple living. One can't have lofty aspirations without a peaceful state of mind." The construction of a world-class business school is a long-term and difficult task. We must look to the future from the broader perspective with cultivation of virtue, free from arrogance and impetuosity and pursue the excellence with higher standards and more tenacious perseverance.

Every year I give a new goal for our school’s development. In 2008 our goal was “Dreaming Soaring”, that year we successfully laid the foundation for being a global business school with the support of HSBC. In 2009, we dedicated ourselves to building a “Business School with Service Training”, beginning a unique business school model that emphasizes an innovative, dedicated and team-centered spirit. In 2010, we emphasized our “Mission” of building a first class business school. In 2011, our goal was the “Journey” of continuing to move forward towards building a first-class business school. In 2013 our goal was “Inheriting Surpassing.”  For the upcoming year 2014, our goal will be “Building toward the Future.”

“Building toward the Future”, not only means that we just complete the construction of the new building, but we should take this as an opportunity to develop a new starting point and climb to new heights in the teaching and scientific research. "The University not means the building but master in the scientific and social areas". The new building only provides a good environment for us, but the most important is that we need first-class research, teaching and class management. In 2008, we have developed a five year development plan, and has now successfully completed. In 2014 we will usher in the 10 anniversary and will develop a new five year and ten year development plan in order to guide us to a new goal. No new starting, no further development. Only continuous innovation and forging ahead together with new and higher standards, we can truly become a world-class business school in the near future.

Going farther, is our goal. We established the goal of building a world-class one since the establishment of business school. This goal is the country's needs, but also the world’s. After 30 years of reform and development, Chinese economy already became the world second with total trade ranking the first in the world. To manage such a decisive role in the economic entity, we need a large number of international first-class talents. China faces the dual transition from a planned economy to the market economy and from a developing country to a developed one. Whether the transition can succeed not only is in close relation to the China’s future and also will affect the entire world. To cultivate a large number of social elite with professional knowledge and comprehensive quality, as well as international vision and the ability to handle international affairs is the country's needs, but also the historical mission of Peking University HSBC Business School.

In the next year, as we have begun to use the new PHBS building, we will develop more academic specializations to create more academic diversity. We will aim for a sense of mission and responsibility, and encourage dedication and hard work. We will be attuned to the trends of the financial and economic markets, and we will make more contributions to the development of business leaders within China and the world. We should further improve the quality of teaching; improve the training scheme, especially in MBA, EMBA and EDP program. Besides, we should conscientiously sum up experience, and constantly improve ourselves to early reach the first-class standard. We should be stricter with our students, abide by disciplines, requires the character of hard work, concerned about the collective, public spirited to cultivate the Peking University HSBC characteristics with internationalized talents and high quality.

In the New Year, we will employ more outstanding faculty who will be leaders in the forefront of their academic fields. We will enroll more international students with the hope of increasing the international development of PHBS. We will enhance our influence in the world economy and in the field of finance with international communications, seminars and certification.
In the New Year, we need to further improve the efficiency of the administrative work, straighten the relationship and cooperation among the different departments, offer enthusiastic service and maintain strict management. In the process of attracting first-class teachers and recruit top students, we should aim at creating a first-class management and service team.

Dear faculty, staff and students, may the past inspire us and may the future be filled with pride and enthusiasm. In 2014, we will celebrate in the first 10 years anniversary of the establishment of PHBS. We not only need to celebrate the achievements of the past 10 years, but also to put forward the goal for the next 10 years. Let us cooperate more closely and work hard together to show our spirit in unity and harmony as a member of PHBS. Let us create a bright future and build a new milestone for PHBS in the next year! I wish Peking University HSBC Business School success in its future endeavors! I wish all of you good health, success in your work and happiness in your family!
