Saturday, March 15th. As a part of China Studies Project, a group of Peking University HSBC Business School graduate students headed by Professor Huang visited two companies: HuaDa JiYin– BGI Gene Research Institute, one of the world’s largest companies specialized in genetics, and Shenzhen Wuzhoulong Motors Co., Ltd., one of the most innovative Chinese enterprises producing environment-friendly, new energy buses and coaches.

Having arrived at BGI, our delegation of students was met by Mr. Zhang Gengyun, vice president of the research institute. Mr. Zhang gave our students a short lecture about the development of genetic science, as well as provided a brief outlook of the company’s profile.

Being founded in 1991 in Beijing as a scientific and research center, BGI, in this time has developed close collaboration and scientific partnership links with the most advanced universities around the world, as well as established a network of offices that covers such regions as South-East Asia, Western Europe, Japan, and the United States. The company’s solid knowledge base allows it to provide solutions in terms of scientific research, applying its technologies in health care and health diagnostics. BGI contributes a lot to the development of agriculture services and provides innovative solutions for computing and processing massive amounts of data related to genomics. The company also enjoys a big variety of BGI brand related companies specializing in a certain field as BGI-Tech, BGI-Health, BGI-Agro, etc. It has received many acknowledgements by a large number of institutions for its success and achievements. Mr. Zhang says that this industry has great potential and bright future prospects.

After HuaDa BGI, our group visited the Shenzhen Wuzhoulong Motors Co., Ltd, green economy buses producer. We were given a warm welcome by Mr. Zhang Jingxin, the president of the company, Mr. Zhu, Deputy General Manager of the International Business Department and their colleagues. Our students were also given a short company profile. In 14 years, the company has developed into a top hi-tech enterprise specializing in designing and manufacturing new energy buses. Apart from Shenzhen, the company has another factory in Guangdong, which produces batteries, and in Chongqing and Shenyang. In the demonstration room our students were able to see the evolution of technologies developed and applied by the company. We were able to see the already assembled products and take a short round trip on a pure electric city bus.

The company demonstrated to us a sophisticated security network with a centralized system collecting all the information about the buses currently operating on the roads. All the information is collected, processed, and displayed on a specially designed information center. The company has a developed system of overseas sales, exporting its various products to more than 40 countries all over the world. It also has strong cooperation links with Hong Kong, which means that the production fulfills high safety and performance requirements and corresponds to the highest standards. It has the largest number of new energy buses operating worldwide. The product range includes city buses, coaches, special buses as well as new energy components. The engines series include diesel, fuel cells, hybrid, and pure electric motors. After the presentation, our students asked questions about the challenges and future of the company. The company’s management shared their opinion about prospective directions and welcomed for cooperation those who are interested in this industry.

As one of the international students in PHBS, Alex said, “The trip gave our students a unique opportunity to learn more about China’s most outstanding and successful enterprises of certain industries, as well as learn some Chinese business culture. It gave us a unique chance and valuable experience in communicating with the top management of these companies. We all thank Professor Huang and the companies’ management for this activity and hope that it will lay foundations for strong mutually beneficial cooperation ties between Peking University HSBC Business School and HuaDa BGI and Shenzhen Wuzhoulong Motors Co., Ltd.; and we hope that such visits would be arranged on a regular basis.”
