PHBS makes progress in communicating with the Free University of Berlin

Invited by the Confucius Institute of Free University of Berlin (Freie Universität Berlin), Professor Huang Haifeng, the director of the Center for Green Economy at Peking University HSBC Business School in Shenzhen, went to Berlin to discuss green economy policy. The event was the first formal academic cooperation since his last visit in February.
 
On July 12, a number of German experts from different fields gathered for the one-day seminar. Among them, Martin Jarucke, who originally raised the ecological modernization theory,focused on China’s environmental policy. Professor Paul R. Krugman analyzed the impact of green economy on herdsmen in Xinjiang and Tibet. Sociologist Professor Luo Meijun and Professor He Lanjun, a political scientist,also joined the discussion with different perspectives. Professor Huang elaborated on Chinese environmental issues and the challenges and opportunities they present , proposing to build green economy as a bridge in Sino-German cooperation.
 
Between July 13 and 20, using his academic monograph “Chinese Economy in Transition” as the basic textbook, Prof. Huang offered a course titled “The Transition of Chinese Economy and the Development of Green Economy.” The course was held at the Confucius Institute of Free University of Berlin (Freie Universität Berlin). Thirty German students of various majors and research focuses, including Ph.D. candidates, master’s candidates and undergraduates, participated. By using vivid cases, Prof. Huang introduced the latest development and achievements in the Chinese economy. Further, he invited German students to come to China and encouraged them to play a role in the development of the Chinese green economy.
 
As part of his visit, Prof. Huang, on behalf of the Center for Green Economy, established a cooperative relationship with the German-Sino Promotion Centre for Environment and Energy (DCZUE, Deutsch-Chinesisches Zentrum für die Förderung der Umwelt- und Energie), as well as with the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS: www.iass-potsdam.de).
 
The director of the Confucius Institute, professor Ruo Meijun, said that the course inspired students’ focus on China and hopes that both sides strengthen their cooperation in the future. Indeed, following the event, a number of students expressed interest in pursuing advanced studies at PHBS.
