A delegation from Peking University HSBC Business School (PHBS) attended the EU Chamber of Commerce's seminar, “Europe – Back on Track,” to strengthen the school’s contacts with European businesses. Assistant Dean Haifeng Huang, MBA Office Director Na Mao, and international student  Julian Barg  participated in the event at the Hilton Hotel Shenzhen on November 25.

Many of the international branches of European companies in Shenzhen were represented, most prominently Germany's giant Siemens. Chinese companies and associations specializing in Chinese-European trade and cooperation were also well represented.  One of the immediate outcomes for PHBS was to invite Benoit Stos of the European based audit, accounting and consulting group Mazars to offer a guest lecture for the China studies class, a course designed to introduce international students to Chinese culture and economy.

A seminar led by Vincent Piket, head of the EU's Office in Hong Kong and Macau, addressed the state of the economy in China from EU businesses' perspective. He commented that both sides share a short-term pessimistic but mid- to long-term optimistic view, stemming from successful reforms of the EU in recent years and a new and hopefully long lasting push for rule of law in China.

Vincent Piket's message: #investEU

Overall, the seminar emphasized the benefits of economic liberalization.  Green products were mentioned several times, as it appears that they play an important role in the EU's talks on trade agreements worldwide.  EU negotiating partners seem especially willing to drop tariffs and restrictions on green products, Piket said.  He also mentioned the EU Chamber of Commerce's hope that the EU might retain or revitalize manufacturing in the area of green products.
