The soccer team from Peking University (PKU) Shenzhen Graduate School solidly trounced the team fielded by the Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen Graduate School with a 4-1 win.

All of the team members of PKU Shenzhen come from Peking University HSBC Business School (PHBS) soccer team, and the game was notable for PHBS initially fielding 10 international students and only one Chinese student.

The soccer game was part of the 10th set of games held by University Town, which has hosted a variety of sports events over the past two weeks.

The entire PHBS soccer team consists of 23 Chinese students and 12 international students from Germany, Singapore, Morocco, the U.S., Tunisia and Russia.

The team netted the first goal about 30 minutes after the match started, with the second goal scored five minutes later and two goals in the second half sealing the team’s victory.

Isham Syah Putra, a 25-year-old Singaporean student, said the team members’ diverse nationalities contributed to their win. “We built our own diversity. That’s also one of the rules of PHBS, and we implemented it in our soccer team,” he said.

The team’s captain, Mahmoud Berrajaa, 22, is a full-time student from Morocco majoring in management. Although the team didn’t have a coach or training routine, Berrajaa said the team spirit was their strength. “When we train together and fight together, we will win,” he said.

Berrajaa has been playing as a professional soccer player since he was 18, and he wants to found an official soccer club in Shenzhen in the future and build a professional team that can compete on the international level.

Hai Wen, the dean of the business school, kicked the opening ball for the match. According to Hai, the school encourages international students to learn Chinese by providing free Chinese classes and organizes study tours to rural areas.

Currently there are 172 international students from over 50 countries studying in the business school. “We plan to expand the enrollment of international students and hopefully one-fourth of students at our school will be from overseas in five years,” Hai added.

Soccer teams from four universities, including Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School and South University of Science and Technology of China, have joined the game and contended for the championship during eight matches held since Nov. 22.
