SME Research Center of Peking University HSBC Business School

The Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Research Center was founded, with the support from Peking University and central and local government agencies, in the HSBC Business School at Peking University on January 6^th, 2012.
    The Director of the SME Research Center is Professor Philip Y. Huang, a Professor of Operations Management at Peking University, an Adjunct Professor in China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), and a Professor Emeritus at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The Executive Director of the SME Research Center is Dr. J. George Wang, a Visiting Professor of HSBC Business School at Peking University, a tenured Professor of Finance at City University of New York, and the Executive Chairman of the Global Alliance of SMEs. The members of the Advisory Board of SME Research Center include Carlos Magarinos, the Honorary Global Chairman of the Global Alliance of SMEs, a former Director General of UNIDO, and a former Minister of Industry and Mining of Argentina, Ronald Bew, the former associate administrator of US Small Business Administration, and Dr. Yingzhong Gao, a Guest Professor in the HSBC Business School at Peking University and the Director of Small Business Administration of Zhejiang Province. There are currently five professors and dozens of full time graduate students affiliated with the SME Research Center.
    The main activities of the SME Research Center include the following four areas: research, exchange, training, and services. Through conducting academic and empirical research, consulting, and other related activities in these areas, the Center provides a platform for communications and idea exchanges among scholars, professionals, entrepreneurs, and policy makers who are involved in the development of the SMEs.  These activities enhance the integrations of academic theories and industry practices, contribute its due share to the sustainable growth of SMEs in China and around the world, and help to build Peking University a world-class academic institution.
 
Faculty

Philip Y. Huang, Ph.D., CFPIM
He is currently a Professor of Operations Management at Peking University, an Adjunct Professor in China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), and the Thornhill Professor Emeritus at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Dr. Huang is also the Director of the SME Research Center of Peking University HSBC Business School.  Previously he served as an Associate Director and Acting Director of the Center of Electronic Commerce in Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. From 1988 to 1992, Dr. Huang worked for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a technical consultant and organized several groups of American management experts to visit China for training, consulting, and lecturing activities in Shanghai, Beijing, Nanjing, Zhejiang, Hunan, and Liaoning provinces. He was also the President of the American Chinese Management Educators (ACME) Association. In the academic field, Dr. Huang published more than 30 articles in some top international journals, and his major research areas cover operations management, supply chain management, project management, and information management.
 
J. George Wang, Ph.D.
The Executive Director of the SME Research Center of Peking University HSBC Business School, a Visiting Professor at HSBC Business School at Peking University, and a tenured Professor of Finance at City University of New York. Dr. Wang has been engaged in many SME research and international exchange activities between China and the rest of the world with a focus on the USA. He has been serving as the Executive Chairman of Global Alliance of SMEs, the President of the US-China Exchange Association, and a member of International Council of the US National League of Cities, an organization provides advices on international issues for the US locally elected and appointed officials. In addition, he has worked in the industry for more than 10 years as a lead analyst at AT&T Corporation and the famous Bell Labs. In the academic area, Dr. Wang has over a dozen papers published in some top international journals, including some well-cited ones. His research areas cover international finance, business cycle forecasts, forecast methodology evaluation, corporate finance, industrial analysis, and tech innovation management system. He also provides consultation for Chinese companies for their listing on USA capital market, mergers and acquisitions, and development of overseas markets.
 
Juan Yang, Ph.D.
Assistant Director of the SME Research Center of Peking University HSBC Business School, and an Assistant Professor of the HSBC Business School at Peking University. Dr. Yang was a visiting scholar at Biofuel Group of Argonne National Lab in University of Chicago, undertaking researches on new energies. Her research fields cover Agribusiness and Marketing, Financial Economics, Macro and Monetary Economics, Policy Analysis, Applied Econometrics, and Strategic Management.
 
Richard Chan, Ph.D.
An Assistant Professor of the HSBC Business School at Peking University, and his work experience includes working at XCEO, Inc. in Santa Clara, CA, as a researcher, Department of Housing and Urban Development in San Francisco, CA, an Intern, ALZA (Subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) in Mountain View, CA, as a Summer Intern, SYBASE at Emeryville, CA as a Need Assessment Project Manager, and Bay Area Rapid Transit, Oakland, CA as a Marketing Consultant. His research fields include Dual Process, Entrepreneurship, Venture Equity, Entrepreneurship Management & Judgment, and Decision Making.
 
Idelson Marc, Ph.D.
An Assistant Professor of the HSBC Business School at Peking University, and his research fields include Entrepreneurship Design, Intellectual Management, and Organization Theory.
