Abstract

In a recent provocative series of paper , Angrave et al. (2016) criticized the lack of sufficient big data-based approaches for limiting the development of human resource management (HRM) practices and research. Although Angrave et al. (2016) emphasized the importance of applying a big data approach to HRM research, clear guidance regarding how to integrate a big data approach with HRM studies is missing. This review therefore examines the benefits and characteristics of big data and proposes a future agenda for the application of big data approaches to HRM research. In addition, we summarize the general procedures for conducting big data research and eight methods that are applicable in big data HRM research. Finally, we identify three potential HRM research topics ranging from the micro, meso and macro levels along with a new method for deductive big data HRM research.
