Peking University is established in accordance with international standards. It is no exaggeration to say that the history of Peking University is the history of catching up the first-class universities in the world. Which is the way to catch up with the advanced international standards? Simply speaking, it is opening up and reform. That is, we should draw on successful experiences of others to go by, recruit excellent teachers and reform leadership mechanism.

When talking about the spirit of Beijing University, Prof.Hai pointed out that this spirit is concentrated on the following areas.

First, social responsibility. When inspecting Peking University on 3rd May, Hu Jintao stressed that Peking University has always been in line with national destiny and it is also the spirit and pride of Peking University. As the top university in China, who can represent china if Peking University not?

The initial aims were further developing education in Shenzhen. In addition, there were some subjects that Shenzhen has more priories to develop than Beijing.

After seven years’ exploration and consideration, we have reached a consensus on the basic direction of development of Shenzhen Graduate School, that is, we must run the Shenzhen graduate school well to make it an important part of building Peking University as a world-class university.
To complete this historical mission, it is necessary for us to form our own characteristics and complement with the Department in Beijing.

Prof.Hai Wen also pointed out some special features of the future of Shenzhen graduate school.

First,cross-discipline.In the scientific and technological Modernization, cross-discipline is more and more important. However, its domestic development is very slow. At present, our Hospital chemical genomics laboratory is the cross between biological discipline and chemical discipline, and it takes on a very good development momentum.
In future, we can integrate environmental and legal, economic and legal, environmental and economic subjects and establish cross-disciplinary research centre. Shenzhen Graduate School has the opening up conditions for cross-discipline.

Second, the application of academic. We have priority in applied research in Shenzhen. Moreover, we should make our applied research more academic value.

Third, the frontier areas. Shenzhen Graduate School must break the shackles of traditional disciplines and explore frontier areas vigorously to develop its own characteristics. Nowadays, we are focusing more on the future. As a first-class university, we must look at what our society will need after five years, and even ten years. Our goal is to train top talents who not only understand business, but also know development direction.

Fourth, the international standards. Although Shenzhen is far away from Beijing, it is close to Hong Kong which is an international city. Meanwhile, Shenzhen is a very vibrant city. So we should build Shenzhen Graduate School as an international campus from the leadership concept.

Prof. Hai Wen pointed out confidently that: it is very possible to achieve the above objectives. There will be a certain scale of hundreds of high- quality teachers and 10 top disciplines in the next five to 10 years in Shenzhen.
