Visual media is increasingly prevalent in today’s media landscape and is intertwined with numerous aspects of our democracy, including information integrity, political engagement, and digital inequality. Meanwhile, advances in artificial intelligence, especially in computer vision, have facilitated large-scale analysis of visual data. In this talk, I will demonstrate how we can apply computational methods to analyze visual media and address theoretical inquiries in communication research.  The examples include visual communication strategies of politicians, visuals in health and science communication, and entertaining videos from far-right media. Finally, I will discuss some future research directions in computational communication research.
