At 7:30 p.m. on October 29, 2014, the Shenzhen and Hong Kong Economics and Finance Association of Peking University (SHEF) held a sharing session about the secondary market in room 335 at the PHBS building. Han Haifeng, the former chairman of this student organization and now employed by China Southern Fund Management, was the guest speaker and  shared his understanding of the secondary market and discussed his career development.

Han focused on the structure of the secondary market. He divided his presentation into three parts: the primary market, the secondary market and the intermediate market. Then he analyzed the profit model for the buyer and the seller.

Next, Han introduced the different departments in a fund company, including sales, risk control, and compliance, discussing their specific roles and the characteristics of the corresponding personnel. For example, he told the students that based on his experience, the Risk Control Department holds promise for career advancement in banks and insurance companies.

Han also addressed the career development path of the researcher in the secondary market, as many students are interested in this entry-level position. He said that in general the novice researcher can become a senior in five years through various training opportunities. However, each individual will follow a different development path according to his or her own skills and abilities. A mainstream path is to become a fund manager assistant and then a fund manager. Others might choose to continue research or move into a relevant management position. Han said that a researcher’s life is full and busy, and summarized, “Research and investment is a never-ending practice.”

Finally, Han shared his methods for learning how to make investments, pointing out that students should learn from rules rather than cling to an example, and they should learn from their own experiences.
