During the lecture, Dean Wen Hai shared his insights on China's current economic situation, the future of the Chinese economy and challenges for future development. China has maintained a GDP growth of less than 8% for seven consecutive years since 2012 to 2018. Dean Wen Hai pointed out reasons for this slowdown trend. In general, China’s economic growth has undergone a transition from a high speed growth into a middle high speed growth, and China’s social structure is changing. International environment should also take into consideration. There is not only a business cycle in China, but also an industrial structure adjustment, which is more challenging.

Dean Wen Hai also pointed out four engines of growth in the next stage, which are reform and development in service, promotion of urbanization, high-tech and innovation in manufacturing and international cooperation from “the belt and road initiative”. Students were enthusiastic about being able to gain valuable insight into China’s transition from an emerging economy toward a developed economy. They raised questions about industrial restructuring and upgrading, corporate governance and reform, human capital and other factors for a better understanding of China’s economy and its current situation, which were given answers by Professor Wen Hai respectively.
