In October, four scholars from Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) visited Shenzhen, where they engaged in a four-day academic exchange with faculty and students from Financial Media Program of Peking University HSBC Business School (PHBS). Their visit also included tours of leading companies such as Tencent, BGI, and DJI.
PHBS focuses on academic research in economics, finance, management, and media, with a goal to be a top-tier “Business Academy at the Forefront of Reform and Opening UP.” Its Financial Media Program is built on a unique educational model of finance+, data+, and internationalization. ADM+S of Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University (RMIT) is a new, cross-disciplinary, national research center, which aims to create the knowledge and strategies necessary for responsible, ethical, and inclusive automated decision-making. During their visit, PHBS Associate Dean and Associate Professor Young Joon Park, along with Financial Media Program Coordinator Ye WeiMing, held a meeting with the ADM+S delegation, reaching a broad consensus on topics such as collaborative research.
ADM+S Director and Distinguished Professor of Media and Communication at RMIT, Julian Thomas, delivered an academic lecture titled “Mapping Digital Inclusion in Australia.” Through a Digital Inclusion Index, Professor Thomas illustrated the nationwide distribution of digital access, literacy, and skills in Australia, as well as national policies promoting digital equity.
ADM+S Chief Researcher and RMIT Professor of Media and Communication, Yu Haiqing, gave a lecture titled “The Social Credit System as Method: Communication and Technological Imaginary of Digital China”, providing a multi-dimensional analysis of the development of China’s social credit system.
In addition, the delegation embarked on a series of insightful tours and discussions at leading institutions and businesses in Shenzhen. They explored BGI’s advanced research facilities and engaged in in-depth discussions with BGI researchers on the latest advances and future directions in life sciences.
The scholars also visited DJI's exhibition center, to gain insights into the latest advancements in drone and robotics technology. They praised the convenient operation and superior imaging quality of its products, highlighting the company's leadership in the field.
Their itinerary also included a visit to Huaqiangbei, where they observed the bustling market activity and learned about the area's rich history and achievements in electronic innovation. They visited the Huaqiangbei Museum, SEG Communications Market, and HQ Mart in Huaqiangbei, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the region's electronic ecosystem.
Furthermore, the scholars toured Tencent Building Binhai to learn about the company’s industry development. They also engaged in a dialogue with PHBS Financial Media Program alumni, discussing AI technology development from the perspectives of regulations, investment, and technical limitations in both China and abroad.
Despite the brevity of their visit, both sides have already begun to discuss future collaboration opportunities, with a shared commitment to advancing technological and social research.
