Platforms today profoundly impact our information behaviors through interfaces and algorithms, moving beyond their role as neutral intermediaries connecting the supply and demand sides in the contemporary information ecosystem. However, alterations to these components can frequently result in unintended consequences, underscoring the need for empirical investigations. This talk delves into two specific pathways, centering on digital news engagement on Weibo. Leveraging two natural experimental studies and computational methods, I provide empirical assessments on how platforms can influence news engagement distribution and uncivil commenting behaviors. These findings could help us better understand platform moderation and platformization today.
