In this talk, I introduce the Situational Theory of Problem Solving, Information Market Theory, Lay Informatics Theory, and Strategic Behavioral Management of Public Relations to build a foundation for understanding conspiracism. Conspiratorial publics and their growing epistemic conviction in invalid conclusions result in schisms, distrust, and doubt in legitimate organizational and social processes, all of which incur costs and risks to organizations and society. I discuss the relative effectiveness of counterstrategies for lay publics entrenched in conspiracism based on the four theories.
