Introduction: Julian Thomas is Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society and leads the Australian Internet Observatory. He is a Distinguished Professor in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University. His latest books are Wi-Fi (Polity 2021) and the Sage Handbook of the Digital Media Economy (Sage 2022). His recent work includes studies of automation in digital advertising, the history of mapping and navigation in autonomous vehicles, and recommendation systems in the book industry. Other projects include the Australian Digital Inclusion Index (Telstra, 2016-2023), Internet on the Outstation: The Digital Divide and Remote Aboriginal Communities (INC, 2016), and The Informal Media Economy (Polity, 2015). He was elected to the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 2017, and from 2022-2024 was Chairperson of ACCAN, the Australian Communications Consumers Action Network. |
