Digital Connectivity, Climate Emergency, and Corona Pandemic: The Battle for Sustainability

We are currently facing an accelerating climate emergency and the worst public health epidemic in a hundred years. This week leaders from around the world meet in Glasgow in Scotland for COP 26 to try to reach agreement on how to limit global temperatures to below 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. At the same time the global Covid 19 pandemic continues to generate infections and death. In this paper I want to ask three questions. Firstly, how has the rapid development of digital communications over the last three decades contributed to our current  crises? Secondly, what are the likely impacts of emerging developments around AI, the internet of things, and robotics. Thirdly, what changes do we need to make to our communication systems to ensure a sustainable future?
