How do people get mobilized into collective action that sometimes changes the trajectory of history? Among many determinants, the importance of ideas has long been noted and debated. At the same time, the impact of ideas on individuals is often elusive and difficult to prove. In this study, we use the spread of Communist ideology in China to demonstrate how ideas can affect individuals' political actions, which ultimately shaped the fate of modern China.
